But enough about the Mission - on to Potrero Hill! I could go into some of the cool and interesting things we learned about the area while putting this issue together, but you can see for yourself. I will say we were very disappointed that a neighborhood institution, Roosevelt Tamale Parlor, was closed every time we tried to go. We thought it was closed for good, but apparently it's just going through some repairs and a change of ownership. That’s a small example of the changes going on in the area, and evidence that the City’s constantly molting and reinventing itself, a little bit at a time. Whether we like it or not, change is good - it keeps us from getting too comfortable. If you don’t like change, you’re definitely in the wrong city. On a more serious
note, we were shocked and saddened by the loss of two amazing members
of the local rock scene - Slowfinger’s Paul Ohlhaver and Continental’s
Brent Kimble - within a month of each other this spring. Coincidentally,
we had items on both bands planned for this issue before they died. Jennifer Elks |

| Hey
everybody! First, I have to thank everyone who helped out with our first
fundraiser on May 7, whether you donated a prize to the raffle, helped us
organize, or just showed up; without your help, we wouldn’t have been
able to print this issue! Since we began, we’ve realized that no matter how much research we do, we can’t possibly find every noteworthy spot in a neighborhood or keep up with all the comings and goings. Already a lot has changed in the Mission since our last issue came out - several places we mentioned have changed hands, like La Fiamma, which just reopened as La Provence (sans Luisa), and Mimi Barr, which is now the adorable Candystore. We thought Café Arguello was gone, but it seems to be reopening on 25th and Mission. We were also excited to discover some new additions to the neighborhood, including a new Minnie Wilde store on 21st and Valencia, and a cute new place called Chamalyn - one-stop shopping for all your Pocky, stationery, sticker and crazy Asian candy needs - on 20th and Valencia. And then there’s Phil and his made-to-order brews and blends at Philz Coffee (24th and Folsom) - who knew? Everybody but us, apparently. |
